AP3 Summer Camp Recap

blog post-01

The ExpressJet Recruiting Team hosted eleven flight students enrolled in our AP3 program for our August AP3 Camp this week in Atlanta. The camp provides select students in our AP3 program the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at a live airline operation. Over the course of three days they learn about professionalism and career planning, pilot training and, in some cases, even complete an interview for a First Officer position.

The event kicked off Monday, July 31 with a welcome celebration (which included doughnuts!) at our A-Tech facility near Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Students were then able to meet with our Crew Resource Management teams and learned all about emergency procedures training in our CRJ cockpit trainer. A tour of the maintenance, dispatch, and operational support facilities followed, which gave students a firsthand look at the 24/7/365 operation and all that it takes to launch an airplane. After a catered lunch students dove into learning more about career pilot lifestyle, such as seniority-based career progression and met with dispatchers and crew scheduling. The evening wrapped up with another critical pilot skill – golfing! The group ventured out on the town to Top Golf in Midtown Atlanta for dinner, arcade games and a friendly golf competition.

After an early breakfast at the A-Tech, the second day of adventures began with a tour of the ATL crew room facilities in Concourse C of the airport where students got to check out the Chief Pilot and Chief Flight Attendant offices and even flight crew rest areas. Captain Darrin Greubel, ExpressJet Director of Flight Operations, spoke to our AP3 students about the state of the regional industry, some career planning considerations and all about the life of a pilot ExpressJet.

Later that day, the students were able to fly a full motion CRJ simulator with an instructor pilot from our training department. As all the students rotated in and out of the simulator, those who met our qualifications for the AP3 early interview process were given the opportunity to complete their AP3 testing onsite. We’re very excited to announce seven of the Camp attendees were successful and went home with a conditional job offer here at ExpressJet. Once they finish school and gain some flight experience, they’ll be on their way to the front end of one of our jets! Celebrations followed at Atlanta’s new SunTrust Park for an Atlanta Braves baseball game.

On the third and final day, the group spent the morning touring the Atlanta Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) air traffic control facility, located south of the airport in Peachtree City. They got an in-depth look at one of the busiest radar approach control facilities in the country. In addition to funneling all air traffic in and out of ATL, the Atlanta TRACON also covers the numerous satellite airports in the entire metro Atlanta area.

After a farewell lunch with recruiters, the students headed home with new memories, knowledge, and connections that we hope they will carry with them throughout their flying careers.

OSU Flying Aggies Win $1,000

The competition was fierce but ultimately the Flying Aggies from Oklahoma State University won. The first place team won a $1,000 grant to their organization, ExpressJet-branded gear, free simulator session in Houston and a dinner with ExpressJet recruiters.

During the summer, ExpressJet was proud to sponsor our first video contest, a competition amongst students for a chance to win $1,000 for their student organization. The contest was developed as an effort to continue, engage and empower future aviators across the country during the summer when school is out of session.

The competition, which was open to all of our Airline Pilot Pathway Program (AP3) schools, provided students with the opportunity to showcase their love for aviation, their university and ExpressJet in general. Students applied by submitting their video submission online by using the designated competition hashtag, #AP3SUMMERFUN. A review committee of pilot recruiters judged each video on the following criteria described below:

  • Followed all guidelines-20%
  • Creativity-50%
  • Demonstrated a passion for aviation-10%
  • Showed school pride-10%
  • Included AP3-10%
  • EPIC Ambassador Shout-out-Bonus 10%

Flexible interview schedule with ExpressJet

Interview Anywhere Map CLE-01

At ExpressJet, we understand that you may have flying or other obligations that prevent you from traveling to a traditional interview in Atlanta or Houston. We are committed to providing you with flexible availability that will allow you to interview with our chief pilots, who will serve as your advocates throughout your career, at any of our bases, at any time.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Complete an application at expressjet.com/apply or via AirlineApps*
  2. Choose a date and base to visit at tinyurl.com/XJTChiefPilots
  3. ExpressJet recruiters – all pilots themselves – will contact you to confirm a date and time
  4. Interview with a chief pilot, tour the base and – hopefully – leave with a conditional job offer (CJO)!

*Candidates must be within six months of earning ATP/R-ATP requirements

Why would I want to meet with a chief pilot?
Chief pilots are your support system at each base. Their role is multifaceted, focused on being an advocate and mentor for their pilots. They also oversee flight operations and performance in their base, and they’re the person you’d come to if you have questions about your schedule, have a family emergency or need career advice. It’s always good to get to know the “boss” before you start a new job, and this is your opportunity to see how great ExpressJet’s leaders are.

What is a chief pilot interview?
The chief pilot interviews are exactly like our regular pilot interviews in our Atlanta or Houston offices. You’ll meet with the chief pilot and a recruiter, complete a knowledge/skills test and an HR interview, and – hopefully – leave with a conditional job offer (CJO)! Besides not having to travel far if you’re local to a base, you’ll also get to tour your future digs, meet your future boss and get a taste of what your days will be like as an ExpressJet first officer.

Where can I interview?
You can interview at any of our crew domiciles: Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Houston or Newark.

When can I interview?
Anytime. You tell us your availability and we will do everything we can to make that happen.

Where do I schedule my interview with my future chief pilot?
First, make sure you’ve completed a first officer application at expressjet.com/apply. Then, sign up for a base and date at tinyurl.com/XJTChiefPilots.

Once your information is received, a member of the ExpressJet Airlines Pilot Recruitment team will be in touch to set up your appointment. We’ll see you soon!
