In our new series, “From Cabin to Cockpit: My Adventures in Flight Training,” we follow flight attendant Linnea Couture in her journey to becoming a commercial pilot. Read on for Linnea’s first entry, and be on the lookout for regular updates on her progress!


My name is Linnea Couture. I am currently a flight attendant for ExpressJet and also a student pilot through the ATP Flight School. I have been working with XJT for about ten months. Three weeks ago I began my journey from being a flight attendant to a commercial pilot, and I cannot wait to share my adventure with all of you!

I have always wanted to become a pilot. When I was a child, my father took me to O’Hare and we would watch the planes inside the terminals and listen to ATC on his scanner all day long. I even dressed up as a pilot for Halloween (of course I went to the airport in my costume) and have always dreamed of someday working as a pilot out of O’Hare. My younger brother is currently a student at the University of North Dakota studying commercial aviation so I would say I definitely have that “flying bug.”


My dream partially came true when I began working as a flight attendant with ExpressJet. I loved my job, but always felt like I was missing a piece to a puzzle. I was constantly asking the pilots during trips how they got their ratings and where they went to school. My crews recommended going through the ATP Flight School and guided me each step of the way; on trips, my crews even quizzed me over the information I would have to learn as a private pilot!

I have now been enrolled at ATP Flight School in DuPage, IL for about three weeks. I can not believe how much I have learned in this short time! I have just about twenty flight hours and over thirty landings logged in my book (I wish I could tell you all of those landings were smooth)! I am talking to ATC, and am trying to make more call-outs during the flights. There is a lot going on, and a lot to remember to do in that little plane! I am currently finishing my first phase of takeoffs, landings and flight maneuvers; stalls, steep turns and slow flight. I will be soloing before I know it at the pace I am going!

I have amazing support from my family, a great flight instructor and classmates, and even still have ExpressJet crews I have flown with checking up on me! I am very excited for this journey to the front seat, and hope you all are in for a great ride!!

Each year, we host an Open House where we invite future pilots, students and aviation enthusiasts to our Atlanta and Houston facilities to provide them with an inside look into life at ExpressJet. During this event, attendees have the opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour, talk with pilot recruiters, learn about financial aid opportunities, interact with local flight schools, attend workshops and listen to testimonials from former ExpressJet pilots who have transitioned to the majors.

Though this is an annual event, this year was extra special as we held our first ever “Flight Experience” at our Atlanta Open House where we took attendees on a quick flight on our branded CRJ200 aircraft. We also raffled off the jumpseat for both takeoff and landing, in addition to raffling off four $25 gift cards. As participants boarded and de-boarded the plane, we gave them a VIP “red carpet treatment” to complement the superstars they are!

Overall, both Open House events were total successes. Attendees and organizers alike had a great time and also assisted in making this year one for the books.

ExpressJet invites Airline Pilot Pathway Program (AP3) students to apply for the 2017 Graduation Cap Student Scholarship of $1,000. Gather your mortar board and decorating supplies to create a graduation cap that highlights why you love aviation and your university.

Who can enter?

The scholarship is open to all AP3 members, graduating in spring or summer 2017.

How do I need to decorate my graduation cap?

Decorate your graduation cap in any style, format, theme and idea you’d like. The more creative the better! We do have a few guidelines:

  • The decorations must be appropriate and not offensive to either your university or ExpressJet
  • Must have some element of aviation incorporated into the decoration

How do I submit a picture of my graduation cap?

To enter, post a picture of your graduation cap to ExpressJet Pilot Recruiting’s Facebook page or send an email that includes a picture of your decorated cap to before May 31.

What are the prizes?

The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to their student loan provider. In order to be eligible for this contest, you must have received some form of financial assistance throughout your collegiate experience.  Scholarship funds will exclusively be distributed to the loan provider on your behalf, no exceptions.

The $1,000 grand prize will be made out to the loan provider the winner designates. For example, if John Dow submitted the winning graduation cap and Great Lakes was his loan provider, the check will be made out to Great Lakes.

ExpressJet will coordinate with the scholarship winner and the loan provider directly.

What are the judging criteria?

A review committee of pilot recruiters will judge each submission on the following criteria. Each criterion will be judged on a 1-5 point scale, and weighted as described below:

  • Followed all guidelines – 20%
  • Creativity – 60%
  • Demonstrated a passion for aviation – 20%The selection committee will notify the winner using the platform the picture was submitted through. We expect to name a winner on June 5, 2017. You must respond to this notification within three days. As a condition of receiving your prize, you must provide us with formal correspondence from you university confirming your graduation. As a condition of receiving your prize, you must sign an affidavit confirming that you followed all rules and are otherwise eligible to receive the prize.

  • Graduation cap may not contain material that is obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, pornographic, offensive, or encourages conduct that would be considered a criminal offense, gives rise to civil liability, or violates any law.

During the summer, ExpressJet was proud to sponsor our first video contest, a competition amongst students for a chance to win $1,000 for their student organization. The contest was developed as an effort to continue, engage and empower future aviators across the country during the summer when school is out of session.

The competition, which was open to all of our Airline Pilot Pathway Program (AP3) schools, provided students with the opportunity to showcase their love for aviation, their university and ExpressJet in general. Students applied by submitting their video submission online by using the designated competition hashtag, #AP3SUMMERFUN. A review committee of pilot recruiters judged each video on the following criteria described below:

  • Followed all guidelines-20%
  • Creativity-50%
  • Demonstrated a passion for aviation-10%
  • Showed school pride-10%
  • Included AP3-10%
  • EPIC Ambassador Shout-out-Bonus 10%

The competition was fierce but ultimately the Flying Aggies from Oklahoma State University won. The first place team won a $1,000 grant to their organization, ExpressJet-branded gear, free simulator session in Houston and a dinner with ExpressJet recruiters.

At ExpressJet, we are committed to meeting aspiring commercial pilots across the country in all training environments. In an effort to engage and forge relationships with all students we created two distinct pathway programs, Airline Pilot Pathway Program (AP3) and Preferred School Program (PSP). Each program shares similarities and differences but at the core is mentorship of student pilots. We want you to be well informed on all that ExpressJet has to offer, so we wanted to take a minute to share answers to a few common questions about the programs:

 What is AP3?

The Airline Pilot Pathway Program, AP3, is a partnership between ExpressJet, select flight schools and universities, and students in the program. At its core, AP3 is a mentorship-based educational program that gives students a highly structured path through school, building hours as a CFI, to a career at ExpressJet.

What is PSP?

ExpressJet’s Preferred School Program (PSP) is designed to give flight school students a clear path to ExpressJet upon earning their flight time and certifications. PSP is similar to AP3, but focused on part 61 and 141 flight schools. Students enrolled in the PSP are offered a competitive advantage with a guaranteed interview at ExpressJet early in their training which leads to a conditional job offer.

 What are the benefits?

In addition to an early interview that leads to a conditional job offer (CJO) and guaranteed job after program completion, students have personal access to our recruiters who can help answer questions, offer advice and be a resource for the student. Students in both programs still get exclusive access to be in the know and register first for our events.

What is the biggest difference between both programs?

The biggest difference amongst both programs, are the schools associated with them. AP3 has relationships with traditional four-year universities and PSP is focused on part 61 and 141 flight schools.

Am I able to receive a CJO through both programs?

Yes! A CJO, or conditional job offer, means you’ve passed the AP3 and PSP version of our new hire interview (congrats!). As long as you complete all the other requirements of the program, staying out of trouble, earning your hours and gaining experience as a CFI, you’re guaranteed a job at ExpressJet when you’re ready to start.

 If I join AP3 or PSP, do I have to go to ExpressJet?

No – students are not required to sign a commitment to ExpressJet to join the programs. We offer desirable bases, industry-leading training and pay, and great work rules, but sometimes ExpressJet isn’t the right fit. We understand that, and we’re here to help you make the best decision for YOU, even if it’s not us.

What are the program paths?

  1. Join AP3 or PSP
  2. Complete program testing (a version of our new hire pilot interview) after earning your instrument rating; if successful receive a conditional job offer (CJO)
  3. Gain experience as a CFI to meet your ATP/R-ATP required hours (remember, you’ll gain 40+ hours in training, so it can actually be a bit less) and maintain a clean record
  4. Complete an application at when you’re within six months of reaching your ATP/R-ATP minimums
  5. Select a date to start your ATP CTP class, paid for by ExpressJet, then start new hire training at ExpressJet (all training is paid)
  6. Fly passengers as an ExpressJet first officer!

What’s the catch?

There is no catch! Our motto in recruiting is “educate, engage, empower” and PSP helps us fulfill those goals. It costs nothing to sign up, you’re not required to come to ExpressJet, and you get a leg up on your career.
